An unopened copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 from the 1990s sold for $ 156,000 on Friday morning, breaking the record for the best-selling single video game at an auction.
The sale took place through Heritage Auctions, attracting 20 participants. The opening bid was an impressive $ 62,500 before surpassing the six-figure amount.
According to Heritage Auctions, the winning bid of $ 156,000 breaks the previous record, which belongs to a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. of 1985 for the NES. In July, it sold for $ 114,000 in a separate auction.
Why do people pay a fortune for an old video game? We do not know. But Super Marios Bros. 3 is often considered one of the greatest NES titles of all time. “It’s no surprise that another Mario game, which many of us grew up with, is setting the new bar,” Valarie McLeckie, director of video games at Heritage Auctions, said in a statement.
McLeckie added that the copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 was found in someone’s closet, never opened. “A lot of times in the case of these sealed games people would just buy them and forget about them,” she said in an email. “It was here.”
This isn’t the first time that Heritage Auctions has sold an unopened copy of Super Mario Bros. 3. In July, he auctioned off another sealed version, but for only $ 38,400.
However, the copy sold today appears to be particularly unique. “Although the condition of the game is remarkable, what makes this copy even more unique is the layout of the packaging itself: extremely rare are copies sealed with the word ‘Bros.’ formatted on the left, covering one of Mario’s signature white gloves, ”Heritage Auctions said.
