Just one day after the introduction of the controversial changes, Epic Games has returned Fortnite the Turbo Build hotfix v10.20.
The initial changes increased the time between setting up structures with Turbo Build – a game setting that allows players to hold down their build buttons and automatically place structures – from 0.05 seconds to 0.15 seconds. This may not seem like a big change, but for professional players and fast builders, tripling time makes a huge difference. As soon as the patch v10.20 is released, the players started complaining about the changes, and trying to understand why Epic did it in the first place.
To help fans and players understand the reasoning behind the change, Epic posted a blog post about Turbo Building, and explained why the changes were needed. Epic explained that the changes were aimed at reducing the benefits enjoyed by low ping players. This advantage was particularly pronounced in turtle and wall replacement situations: when a player is inside a 1×1 fort and another player is trying to destroy his / her wall and rebuild his. In this kind of situation, the advantage would always go to the player with a lower ping and a better connection to the server.
However, the changes did not really solve the problem and the high-ping player continued to struggle. Epic has chosen to go back. Turbo Build will again place the structures in 0.05 seconds. However, Epic does not give up on making connection speeds a bit more equitable, as it introduces another change to help competitors stay on a level playing field.
Once the structure is destroyed, players can no longer replace it for 0.15 seconds. If two players are trying to place a piece at the same place at the same time, a random roll will determine which piece will be selected. While this may seem shocking to arbitrary, it actually turns out to be much more accurate than just allowing the speed of the connection to determine who can build.
Although this change should make the fight more fair between players with different connection speeds, there will always be an advantage in online games for those who have the fastest connection to the server. But at least with the new Epic solution, it is possible that the problem is solved without negative impact on Turbo Build.
