Up to 7 people could be injured in natural gas explosion, fire near Klein

KLEIN, Texas – No less than seven people could be injured Friday in a large explosion of natural gas and a fire near Klein which caused the evacuation of some inhabitants of the area.

The fire was reported in the 18700 block of Gleannloch Lakes Boulevard.

Officials from the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office said a team from Comcast was working in the area and cut a natural gas line. The crew called a CenterPoint crew to inspect the line, which was when two lines exploded, officials said.

A Comcast representative said a contractor cut a small line in an area where the line was not properly marked. The representative said CenterPoint crews struck a larger line while repairing the smaller line.

Klein firefighters said up to seven could have been injured, while HCFMO officials said that number was closer to five. A tweet from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said up to 10 CenterPoint employees had been taken to a hospital for treatment. This tweet was later deleted.

HCFMO officials said one of the injured had to be taken to hospital by helicopter.

Sky 2 video showed several vehicles belonging to a construction crew at the scene. Some of them seemed to be burning.

Officials said at least one house was damaged.

People are urged to avoid the area.

HCFMO officials said people within 500 feet of the scene had been evacuated.

“They must be very worried. We keep them in our prayers and hope that everything will be under control here soon, ”said neighbor Jim Crenshaw.
