With the launch of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL in 2018, Made by Google also released a pair of USB-C headphones for $ 29.99. After two years on sale, the Pixel USB-C earphones are no longer available for purchase from the Google Store.
Update: Google contacted this evening to explain that the Pixel USB-C earphones were still in stock and the list was not loading properly earlier today – users were redirected to the Google Store home page during their visit. Orders placed today arrive next week.
The Pixel USB-C headphones are largely based on the original Bluetooth Pixel Buds introduced in 2017. Design-wise, they’re defined by round flat surfaces that feature the Google “G” logo and adjustable hooks. The part that resides in your ear is plastic with “L” and “R” printed on the surface.
The controls are located on a pill-shaped remote control further down the wire. The standard buttons double their function by holding down the volume up key to read your latest notifications, while the black (play / pause) button activates the microphone for assistant commands.
In addition to offering proprietary wired headphones after the 3.5mm audio jack was removed a year earlier, Assistant is a key aspect of the Pixel USB-C headphones. Google first notes the time before replaying the alerts in your status bar. Another touted ability was real-time translations.
The Pixel USB-C headphones ship with the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, but they weren’t included (worldwide) in the box on subsequent phones. As of today, wired headphones have been removed from the Google Store, although they are still available from some carriers.
The hiatus comes as Google added the assistant’s voice notification feature to all wired headphones last year. This experience can be configured in the Google application after connection (Bluetooth devices excluded), and somewhat avoids the need for Made by Google to sell a dedicated pair. Meanwhile, the company has seen relative success with the truly wireless second-generation Pixel Buds announced in 2019 and launched last year.
