SHAWNEE COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities are investigating a deadly shootout that killed a footballer at Washburn University and injured one of his teammates.

Just before 1:00 am Sunday, police responded at 2 pm southwest of 13th Street in Topeka, citing a disturbance by gunfire in the area, according to Lt. Andrew Beightel. Upon arrival, the officers discovered a victim identified as Dwane Simmons, 23 years old. He was declared dead on the scene.
Another victim of the same incident, 23-year-old Corey Ballentine, arrived at the zone hospital in a private vehicle with a non-fatal gunshot wound.
According to his biography of Washburn University, Simmons was a young media junior from Lee's Summit, Missouri.
A preliminary investigation determined that this incident occurred at a social gathering outside of a residence, according to a press release.
Dozens of people were present at the social rally and the police are currently using it to collect evidence and witness statements. The police need those present to tell them what they saw.
They encourage anyone who has seen suspicious activity to report it to the police or Shawnee County Crime Stoppers at (785) 234-0007.
In a Washburn press release, head coach of American football Crag Schurig said: "Heartbreaking news about Dwane Simmons."
