Microsoft plans to initially release the Windows 10 update from May 2019 for Windows 10 at the end of May 2019. The update was originally scheduled for late March 2019, but the disastrous release of the feature update of Windows 10, version 1809 forced Microsoft to new version.
Windows 10 version 1809 had to be released shortly after it was released due to major issues, including the loss of data on the systems on which the update was installed. It took months for Microsoft to resolve these issues, and the feature update was not ready for an extended deployment until last month.
Microsoft made the decision to test the update of the new feature in the Ring Release Preview before its official release. The main idea was to detect and solve any major problem before the release of the new version. Microsoft also revealed that this would give administrators more control over installing feature updates by making them optional until a particular version of Windows 10 is no longer supported. .
Upgrade blocks
Microsoft is currently listing three upgrade blocks for the May 2019 update. The upgrade blocks prevent the machines from being updated to the new version. They are:
- Devices to which external USB devices are connected to the PC or inserted SD memory cards are blocked from the May 2019 update. Administrators can receive the message "What needs your attention" in this case. The problem is already fixed in Windows Insider Builds 18877 and later; Administrators who want to install the feature update should unplug the external USB devices and remove the SD memory cards in order to do so.
- Devices with "old anti-cheat software" can not update to the new version either. Microsoft does not reveal which anti-cheat programs are causing the problem, only older versions of these programs are responsible. The solution in this case would be to update the software or the anti-cheat game in question, or remove it from the system before installing the update.
- On systems with redirected system folders, such as Desktop, Documents, or Images, an empty folder is created at the location of the original user's profile during the update. This can be confusing, but the files are not removed during the process and Microsoft fixes a fix.
Closing words
There is still work to do before the official release next month. It is possible that some problems will not be detected during development even after about a month of testing in the Ring Preview Preview.
As always, it's a good idea to wait a month or two before you consider upgrading to a new version of Windows 10 features; most bugs should be fixed by then.
Now, it's your turn: What do you expect from the next update?
