Upstate New York Congress Race Uncertain After 55 Uncounted Ballots Discovered

A newly discovered batch of 55 uncounted ballots in a rural county in upstate New York has the potential to alter the outcome of a congressional race that has yet to be called.

Chenango County’s ballots were cast during the state’s early voting period in the 22nd Congressional District – where the ultra-close race between Democratic Representative Anthony Brindisi and his Republican opponent Claudia Tenney takes place.

Monday – which was supposed to have been the last day for election officials to report the total votes in the district – Tenney led the freshman Democrat by a razor-sharp 12-vote margin.

Chenango County District Attorney Alan Gordon informed Supreme Court Justice Scott DelConte of the findings on Tuesday.

“These ballots were apparently misplaced and were never counted,” Gordon wrote.

“I advised our Elections Office not to open any of these ballots and secure them in their offices,” he said.

Of the 55 ballots, 11 appear to come from unregistered voters.

The other 44 could reverse Tenney’s lead, but DelConte still has to rule on more than 2,000 other missing ballots and contested affidavits in the race.

The Brindisi-Tenney contest has been a back-and-forth affair, with the Republican jumping nearly 29,000 votes ahead on election night – only to see that lead disappear as the mail-in ballots rolled in. accounts.
