At fourth and goal with James Robinson sitting on a career-record rushing day, the Jaguars decided to put Carlos Hyde in the game to try and land a touchdown they needed to get back into the game.
Hyde was swallowed up in the backfield by a gang of Titans, putting an end to any hope of a Jacksonville comeback.
At the time, Robinson had over 100 yards in the game and averaged over eight yards per carry.
The play appeal was questionable – like last week against the Bengals – and the post-game explanation was even more muddled.
Coach Urban Meyer has said he does not micromanage staff, although he admitted he likely should have done so in this situation, and was unsure if Robinson had an injury at the time.
At Robinson’s press conference he didn’t mention an injury, he said he trusted his teammates to get the job done.
Then, when asked about the potential for a quarterback to squeeze inches from the end zone, Meyer said Trevor Lawrence was uncomfortable with the game.
“I’m not micromanaging who’s in the game. I should have – James runs really hard, but so does Carlos. I have to go see if anything happened with James in this situation. And the stealthy quarterback, he’s not quite comfortable with that yet.
“We practiced this. I know it might sound silly, but when you’ve never done it, it’s something we need to keep doing, so you can make that call in this critical situation.
During Lawrence’s media availability, he said he was actually comfortable with the play call.
“No, I feel comfortable. Obviously, I’ve never really raced it before in a game, but I feel comfortable. This is something that we have worked on. We trust our guys up front, we trust our backs in this situation.
“Obviously I’d love to be in it, but if we play the game it’s like no one is saying anything, but it’s a TFL, and it obviously doesn’t look good. So we can all get better. But no, a QB sneak is something we can all access and I feel right at home. “
It’s hard to win a match when you’re one minute behind in the contest. This is the situation Jacksonville found himself in when Dan Arnold fumbled on the third game of the game.
Tennessee recovered the ball from the turf and entered the end zone to score the game’s first points.
The Jaguars have never led, and the closest chance of a tie “slipped” when Matthew Wright slipped on the potentially tying extra point at 7-6.
Trevor Lawrence finished the game 22-33 for 273 yards, one touchdown and one interception on the last play of the game.
He also added 28 rushing yards on seven carries and a rushing touchdown for the second week in a row.
Robinson finished with 149 yards on eight carries, a career high for the second-year running back. He had more rushing yards at halftime (110) than he had had in any other full game so far.
With that loss, the Jaguars have now lost 20 straight games.
A figure difficult to grasp even for the players who have accompanied them all.
“You can’t. You can’t understand this,” Robinson said after the game. “We have to find a way to win. We’re a very good team. Obviously our record doesn’t show that, but we have a lot of good guys in the dressing room, and we just have to find something that will work for us. . “
