Tim Tebow is fighting to make the Jacksonville Jaguars roster, he has to prove to his former college coach that he’s worth keeping. The former quarterback turned winger has impressed Urban Meyer at times, but there are still parts of the position he needs to exploit.

“He’s got good hands. In his exercise job he’s great, but when you get into a competitive moment, you just have to [because of his] inexperienced, he wants to keep the ball, “Meyer told reporters at the Jaguars camp on Saturday.” When you get to a point where two people are chasing him, you have to go get the ball. He struggles with it a bit, but he has the skills to catch the ball. “

Tebow has a legitimate opportunity to be on the Jaguar roster. Jacksonville has Chris Manhertz and rookie Luke Farrell battling for the starting position and veteran James O’Shaughnessy competing for a spot on the roster. Tebow is in the picture, but his unique skills can convince the Jaguars to keep him – either by having four tight ends on the roster or beating one of the veterans for a spot.

“[Competition is] alive and well and the reality of 90 players is you’re going to drop it to 53, that’s the reality, ”Meyer said. “I had a discussion with the team about this and I think I want to take the subjectivity out of it. . Kinda like when we had Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins [at Ohio State], my God [they are] two first-round draft picks. It’s not fair for a player not to have objectivity in this and that means drawing everything out.

“Nothing is competitive yet. So starting Monday we will try to remove the subjectivity of who plays and who makes the team.”

The Jaguars’ tight competition is expected to last through the preseason. If Tebow can improve on his weaknesses over the next few weeks, Meyer will have a reason to give him a spot on the list.
