The Oregon Ducks were expected to carry the Pac-12 banner in college football playoff conversation, but it all came to an end last week when the Ducks suffered a surprising loss to their rival in the state of Oregon. The loss knocked the Ducks down in the standings and with a shortened season virtually ended Oregon’s chances of making the CFP bottom four.
Just three weeks after he said Oregon was a program that had the “juice” to be in contention for a national title, former college football coach and current FOX Sports analyst Urban Meyer, offered his assessment after watching the Oregon game last week.
“Last year they had a really good year. They have a good coach, good staff, very good players – I hear the build-up, I was hoping they would play Ohio State.” Meyer continued: “I couldn’t wait to watch this game, it was the first chance I had – I was really disappointed.”
Getting to watch the Ducks for the first time because the game was on Thanksgiving Friday, Meyer was not impressed with what he saw in the Ducks loss. Oregon struggled in the second half, unable to close the game and let the Beavers score with 0:33 left to take the lead.
“This was not a team that looked like a college football qualifying team, so I was disappointed,” said Meyer. “I’m still very confident that the staff will get things done. They have enough good players but something happened that night. They just didn’t look fat, fast and physical. “
Although now two Oregon coaches and six seasons deleted, Meyer recounted the last time he faced Oregon and what the Oregon football brand he knows.
“When we played Oregon in that National Champions game several years ago, remember those big defensive ends? Those big, thick, fast players? I didn’t see that,” said the analyst.
In mid-November, Meyer appeared on Fox Sports and commented that he liked the way Mario Cristobal brought juice to the Oregon program. Meyer then commented on how Cristobal has used his last three recruiting classes to elevate roster talent and set the Ducks for success.
While Oregon didn’t do it against Oregon State and likely ended the 2020 Pac-12 playoff hopes in the process, Meyer still had faith in what Cristobal was doing to Eugene. .
