Even before his team were smacked off in their NFL coaching debut, Jaguars coach Urban Meyer’s ability to adjust from college to pro ranks saw “no shortage of flags.” red, ”according to a report.
Meyer has previously had “repeated problems” with his assistant coaches and “rubbed the coaching staff and players the wrong way,” CBS Sports reported on Sunday morning, citing sources.
Hours after the report was released, rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the Jags were beaten by the Texans, 37-21, in Houston in Meyer’s opener on the Jacksonville sideline.
“[Meyer] everyone is already looking over their shoulders, ”a source told Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. “He messes up far too easily and he doesn’t know how to deal with defeat, even in the preseason. He loses it and wants to resume the exercises himself. It’s not good.”
Another source told La Canfora that Meyer had “rampaged” against members of his coaching staff and “questioned some of their job security” after pre-season losses.
“You can’t panic about preseason games and belittle your coaches – with a staff you’ve handpicked – every time things don’t go as planned,” the second source said. “It won’t work here.”
Meyer, 57, had a career 187-32 record in 17 seasons at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State, including a National Championship for the Buckeyes in 2014. He was hired by the Jags after finishing with a NFL-Worst record of 1-15 last season. That record allowed them to draft Lawrence, who threw for 331 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions in his debut.
