The trade war between the United States and China is creating problems for retailers like Target, said CEO Brian Cornell on Wednesday.

"As long as the trade situation remains fluid, we will create an additional layer of uncertainty and complexity when planning our business," Cornell told analysts at a conference call after the report on second quarter results.

President Donald Trump said last week that he refrained from imposing tariffs of 10% on certain products made in China until December 15th. Samples had to start from September 1st. , laptops and video game consoles, as well as certain types of clothing, shoes and "certain toys". "We are doing it for the Christmas season," said Trump.

Cornell said Target was "encouraged" by the delay. He said the company is benefiting from "its diverse and multi-category assortment, deep global sourcing expertise and sophisticated manufacturing partners around the world".

"As a result, we are confident in our ability to manage this period of heightened volatility and move our business forward," he said.
