LOUISIANA (KTRK) – At least 12 people and two pets were rescued by the US Coast Guard when Tropical Storm Barry stranded in Louisiana.

The first call for help arrived around 4:30 Saturday, which prompted the guard to act.

With the help of a New Orleans helicopter crew and the Maritime Security Unit of Morgan City, the coastguard rushed to help, while people were trapped in floodwaters.

A 77-year-old man from Dulac was among those saved. By the time the coastguard arrived at the man, four feet of water were already inside his house.

He was hoisted safely with the help of a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter.

While Barry continued to ravage Louisiana, the Coast Guard urged people in distress to call 911 for help, fearing that some people would try to use social media to report life-threatening situations.
