US consumers were feeling more confident this month after a stock market rally and the end of the partial closure of the federal government.

The Conference Board, a business research group, says its consumer confidence index rose from 121.7 to 131.4 in January.

The index measures consumers' assessment of the current economic situation and their expectations for the next six months. Both rose in January. Consumer sentiment on the current economy is the sunniest since December 2000.
