US men win Olympic 4×400 relay to avoid questionable record

The American men won the 4×400-meter relay at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, but couldn’t leave behind an appalling overall performance.

Michael Cherry, Michael Norman, Bryce Deadmon and Rai Benjamin teamed up to take the gold in 2: 55.70, comfortably ahead of the Netherlands and Botswana to help their country avoid a big embarrassment.

Without their victory, Tokyo would have marked the first time the American men had failed to win a gold medal on the track in modern Olympic history, Reuters noted. This dates back to 1896 and excludes the boycott year of 1980.

Ryan Crouser won the shot put for a gold medal in Tokyo, but that was it.

Unless something unforeseen happens in Sunday’s men’s marathon, the number of gold medals will always be the worst total ever recorded by American men in track and field – one less than at the London Olympics in 2012, wrote USA Today.
