US Open 2019: Live Updates, How to Watch Rafael Nadal vs. Daniil Medvedev with a Chance of Getting a 19th Grand Slam Title

Rafael Nadal, second favorite, and Daniil Medvedev, fifth favorite, will play the final of the men's singles of the US Open, Sunday. Nadal is looking for his 19th singles title in the Grand Slam and his fourth title at the US Open, while Medvedev will play his first major final.

Nadal, 33, is on a 10-game winning streak and has lost just one set (4R, Marin Cilic) en route to his fifth final appearance at the US Open. Another Grand Slam title would put Nadal just behind Roger Federer's record of 20 singles titles in the Grand Slam. Novak Djokovic, the youngest of the "Big Three" at age 32, has 16. He owns another title in New York, Nadal would overtake Djokovic (3) and would be at one point of Federer's record five.

Nadal is participating in his third Grand Slam in 2019. He has bowed to Djokovic at this year's Australian Open, expanding his own record with a crown of the 12th French Open in Paris. He is the only player – man or woman – to have won the same Grand Slam tournament 12 times. The last time Nadal reached three major finals in one season, it was in 2017, the same year he won the US Open.

Medvedev, 23, is the first Russian to reach the US Open final since Marat Safin's victory in 2000. If Medvedev wins Sunday, he will become the first player out of the Big Three to win a major title since Stan Wawrinka at the 2016 US Open. That's 11 Grand Slam tournaments without a winner who does not call Federer, Djokovic or Nadal.

Medvedev was spectacular this summer and proved to be the real asset in the preparation of the preparatory events for the US Open. The question for Medvedev will be whether or not he can sustain his rise in tennis, continue on his way and finish his season with the first Grand Slam title of his career. He has played 24 singles matches on the court since July 30 and it is possible that the wear and tear of his body will catch up with him, if it is already the case.

The crowd for the Sunday final will undoubtedly be motivated by Nadal, but we have already learned at this tournament that playing the role of the villain does not bother Medvedev. In fact, he claims that boos do exactly the opposite and push him to win.
