Venus Williams had a coffee during a game match during his defeat at the US Open.

Sports stars are like you and me. At least as far as the need for coffee is concerned.

We know that Venus Williams and her sister, Serena, are thirsty for java during the games, even in stifling heat.

It was not surprising then that Venus made this request in his second round match of the US Open on Wednesday, but this time, a fun time was followed by a respectful ballboy.

Williams' coach handed the drinks off the stands to the boy who, like all diligent boys and girls, rushed alongside Williams. Only she was not there, she had gone a few moments earlier to go to the bathroom.

He followed her a step or two, changed his mind and then walked a little in the court before being told to put it right next to his chair.

Well done, young man. The coffee did not help Williams, though. Elina Svitolina defeated Williams, 6-4, 6-4.

This is not the first time Williams needs a java jolt during a match. It was the first thing she asked her coach when she changed position in her August 15 match against Donna Vekic at the Cincinnati Master.

"Coffee?" she inquired and, after a discussion of the strategy, she added, "Can I get it as fast as possible?"

The ball boy chased her a step or two, but changed her mind when Venus went to a toilet break.

She bounced back after a defeat in the first set to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, that day, helping the coffee clearly.

His sister turned to coffee at critical and comical moments.

In 2015, Serena Williams asked for an espresso after losing the first set 6-0 at the Hopman Cup in Australia. She then won the next two sets, 6-3, 6-0, from Flavia Pennetta and joked that she had been drinking "miracle coffee" while the day was hot and humid in Perth.

"Is it illegal to order an espresso?" she asked the chair umpire during a change, laughing while making her request. "I do not know if it's allowed, is it allowed, I'm tired, I'm dead, can I have coffee?"

Sure enough, someone has arrived with an espresso – and small cups of cream – since caffeine is not on the list of banned substances by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
