US Surgeon General: ‘No reason to doubt’ Covid-19 death toll after Trump says deaths ‘exaggerated’

“From a public health perspective, I have no reason to doubt these numbers,” Adams told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union,” when asked about Trump’s statement.

“And I think people have to be very aware that it’s not just about deaths, as we talked about earlier,” he added. “It’s about hospitalizations, about capacity. These cases impact in many ways and people need to understand that there is a finish line in sight, but we have to keep running towards it.”

Earlier on Sunday, Trump claimed on Twitter that the number of cases and deaths of the “China virus is far exaggerated” due to the CDC’s “ridiculous method of determining” compared to other countries, which “report, on purpose, very inaccurately and little.”

“When in doubt, call it Covid,” Trump wrote in a tweet.

The president has previously retweeted conspiracy theories on social media, saying only a small percentage of people who are believed to have died from the coronavirus actually died from the virus.

CNN reported in September that the CDC had to double up its fight against rumors suggesting coronavirus deaths have been greatly exaggerated, with the agency’s leading expert on mortality saying people misinterpret the standard language of certificates of deceased.

“In 94% of deaths from COVID-19, other conditions are listed in addition to COVID-19. These causes can include chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, ”said Bob Anderson, CDC chief of mortality statistics, in a statement to The Time.

“In 6% of death certificates that list Covid-19, only one cause or condition is listed,” the statement added. “The underlying cause of death is the condition that started the chain of events that ultimately led to the person’s death. In 92% of all deaths that mention Covid-19, Covid-19 is listed as the underlying cause of death.
