The United States on Wednesday recorded more than 200,000 new cases of coronavirus and 100,000 hospitalizations from the disease in a single day – a new record in the fight against the virus.

The alarming new figures come after the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Robert Redfield, warned that there could be 200,000 more deaths by February.

“The reality is that December and January and February are going to be tough times,” Redfield said at a US Chamber of Commerce event on Wednesday. “I actually believe this will be the most difficult time in the history of public health in this country,” in large part because of the stress in the health care system.

Redfield said 90% of hospitals are in red zones and 90% of long-term care facilities are in areas with high community outreach.

“The mortality issues are real,” said the CDC director. “I think unfortunately by February we could be close to 450,000 Americans who have died from this virus.”

There have been more than 273,000 deaths from COVID-19 and more than 13,900,000 confirmed cases as of Wednesday evening, according to John Hopkins University.
