"The Department of Defense conducted a flight test of a conventional configuration ground cruise missile off the west coast of the US on Sunday. We are currently evaluating the test results," CNN told CNN. Colonel Carla Gleason.

The tests were conducted from San Nicolas Island, California, and the Pentagon said that "the test missile came out of its ground launcher and hit its target with precision after more than 500 kilometers of flight".

Officials pointed out that the missile is designed to carry a conventional and non-nuclear payload.

US defense officials said that "the data collected and the lessons learned from this test will inform the Defense Ministry's development of future intermediate-range capabilities."

A US defense official said the test missile had left its land-launched launcher and hit its target and the data gathered from this test "will inform the development of our future intermediate-range capabilities."

The United States withdrew from the intermediate-range nuclear forces treaty with Moscow earlier this month after years of accusations of Russia's treaty violation through the deployment of its nuclear-capable SSC-8 missile , thus ending a historic arms limitation pact that limited the development of ground-based missiles with a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometers.

If the United States were to develop a fully operational and mobile ground cruise missile system, an unresolved key question is where it would be deployed.
