MILWAUKEE – The health department of the City of Milwaukee confirmed Friday that mosquito surveillance in the county indicated the presence of West Nile virus.
According to a press release, mosquitoes were collected and tested by the university. Wisconsin – The Madison Entomology Department will conduct seasonal surveillance of West Nile virus.
"A positive mosquito test reminds all residents of the county that it's time to take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites. According to the Milwaukee Department of Health, most West Nile virus infections in Wisconsin typically occur between June and September and are transmitted to humans through a mosquito bite. Symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, rash, headache, and joint pain. Not all mosquitoes carry the virus, and only 20% of individuals bitten by an infected mosquito will develop symptoms. People aged 50 and over and those with underlying diseases are the most vulnerable to the virus.

MHD reminds residents to take steps to prevent mosquito bites. including:
- Staying indoors during periods of high mosquito activity, especially around dusk and dawn
- Using an insect repellent with DEET, IR 3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus, according to the instructions
- the house by fixing holes in screens, windows and doors.
- Prevent mosquitoes from breeding by removing stagnant water from places such as flowerpots, plastic containers, gutters and downspouts. The water in the bird baths and the pet dishes should be changed every few days. Swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs must be cleaned and chlorinated
- Tall grass, weeds and vines are used by mosquitoes during hot weather. to prevent water from gathering in low areas
