1 dead after a plane crashed in the waters off Long Island near Hamptons

QUOQUE, Long Island (WABC) –

At least one person died after a plane crashed into the water about 5 km south-southeast of Francis S. Gabreski Airport from Westhampton Beach on Long Island, a confirmed ABC News.

Coast Guard observers reported seeing a twin-engine Piper PA-34 crashing into water around 11:10 am Saturday about a kilometer from Quogue Beach.

A body was found and the number of people in the plane was not confirmed. The identity of the victim has not yet been unveiled.

Debris and oil were also found near the crash site.

The Air National Guard has sent a rescue helicopter and many agencies are working on the scene.

It is unclear how long the search will last. It will be up to the Coast Guard to decide.
