TOOELE – One person died and two others were wounded after a crash on National Highway 36 north of Tooele, officials said.

The accident occurred near I-80 exit 99 around 3:19 pm, according to Utah Transportation Department officials.

A jeep was traveling south on S.R. 36 at kilometer 66, near I-80 exit, UHP officials said on the agency's website. The pilot tried to change lanes, but struck a Hyundai Elantra and then lost control, the UHP said.

The Jeep then crossed the tracks in a northerly direction and struck a Honda Civic in front, the UHP reported.

The driver of the Honda suffered fatal injuries, according to UHP. The driver and passenger of the Jeep were taken to a hospital via a medical helicopter, according to the agency's website. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The accident caused delays on I-80 and National Highway 201, officials said. According to the KSL Traffic Center, exit 99 is closed to I-80 traffic east and west.

Traffic on S.R. 36 was passing through Grantsville while the exit was closed, according to a tweet from the North Tooele Fire District.

UDOT officials estimated that the accident site would be cleaned around 8 pm.

No additional information on the crash was available immediately.
