Federal agents are investigating after a fisherman on a Virginia-based fishing vessel was killed by another crew member armed with a knife and hammer, officials said. .

Franklin Freddy Meave Vazquez, 27, a Mexican national, is charged with attacking three crew members while his captain, Captain Billy Haver, was sailing about 55 miles off the coast of Nantucket. Vazquez faces a murder leader and an attempted murder leader, according to the US Attorney's Office Andrew Lelling.

"It is further alleged that Vazquez then climbed onto the ship's mast while the others on board tried to capture him," Lelling's office wrote.

A Boston-based spokesman said the coastguard had received a distress call Sunday afternoon from the trawler 83 feet, reporting the attack.
