1 death related to an ongoing turkey salmonella epidemic

NEW YORK – Federal health authorities report the first death of an outbreak of salmonellosis linked to raw turkey.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the death occurred in California, but have no other details. Since last November, 164 people have fallen ill in 35 states.

No products are recalled and no suppliers have been identified. The agency does not recommend people to avoid turkey, but she thinks the epidemic is widespread and ongoing.

The CDC stated that the rare strain of salmonella had been identified in live turkeys, as well as in ground turkeys, turkey patties and raw pet foods.

As Thanksgiving approaches, the agency also reminds people to handle the turkey well. It is recommended to cook the turkey at an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees, as well as to wash hands and counters in contact with uncooked meat.
