1 killed, 6 wounded when a car enters New York pedestrians

A 70-year-old driver who was attempting to park in parallel in New York lost control of his van and hit several pedestrians near a fruit kiosk, killing one dead and six injured, two of them seriously.

The incident occurred shortly before 19 hours. Monday in the Chinatown of Manhattan.

"It looked like a big boom. People were screaming, "said a New York Post man who manages a parking lot on the street after the accident. "I saw people under the car, a lot of blood."

Police said that the driver, who had remained on the scene, was arrested for non-respect of the pedestrian and lacked caution. The video shows a dark van towing down a street in the opposite direction before hitting the sidewalk.

"Terrible car accident," said Mayor Bill de Blasio on Twitter. "A full investigation of the NYPD is underway and we can not accept the loss of life on our streets as inevitable."
