The emergency door and the rear roof hatch were open in the bus, which had tipped to the right side, blocking the main door. The engine compartment of the bus had burned and its hood was destroyed.

The cause of the accident was not determined and the police said she was not expecting to receive any other updates Wednesday night.

Earlier Wednesday evening, Mesquite superintendent David Vroonland said in a statement that counselors were on campus and available to help students.

"My prayers – and those of our Mesquite ISD family – are with the students and families affected."

No other vehicle has been involved in the accident, said Vroonland.

In March, the Terry Middle School was placed in receivership and then evacuated after receiving shots outside the school. Officials determined that a 13-year-old boy had directed a cell phone on other students as he was dealing with a firearm.
