At least 100 residents of a Toms River apartment complex were displaced by fire and transported to a nearby school to shelter early Thursday morning.

Firefighters reacted to a fire alarm and smoke reports on the fourth floor of a five-story building located on Highland Parkway around 6:55, according to the East Dover Fire Company.

About 100 residents of the building were evacuated on school buses and taken to a temporary shelter at South Toms River High School, police spokeswoman Till River Jillian Messina said.

Some residents were lightly inhaled, but no injuries were reported, Messina said.

Firefighters took about 90 minutes to extinguish the fire, said the East Dover Fire Department on Facebook.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
