Authorities seized 110 pounds of deadly fentanyl last week in a shipment from China during a routine inspection at the Port of Philadelphia, officials said.
The 50 packets of this powerful drug were valued at $ 1.7 million, US Customs and Border Protection officials said.
Agents found fentanyl in a shipment of iron oxide after a dog detected narcotics, officials said.
The use of fentanyl has gained momentum in recent years, from an obscure opioid to a more common street drug. His presence has put the authorities in a state of alert, because the drug can be 50 times more powerful than heroin.
Officials seized 951 pounds of the substance last year. The drug killed 900 people in New Jersey only the same year.
"Opioids, including fentanyl and its analogues, are a serious public health problem and the importation of large quantities of this deadly chemical compound poses a threat to national security," Casey Durst, Director field operations. in Baltimore, said in a statement.
