Would you pay more than $ 600,000 for a chunk of the moon? Someone did.
A 12-pound chunk of the moon that fell to the earth as a meteorite has been sold for the out-of-this-world price of $ 612,500.
Boston-based RR Auction announced the winning bid Friday.
The meteorite is composed of six fragments that fit together like a puzzle.
The winning bid came from the Tam Chuc Pagoda complex in Ha Nam Province, Vietnam.
RR officials predicted it would get $ 500,000 at auction.
The meteorite was found last year in a remote area of Mauritania in northwest Africa.
Most famous golfers, said Geoff Notkin, star of television's "Meteorite Men" and CEO of Aerolite Meteorites, which sold the rock.
"As soon as we saw this, we knew it was extraordinarily unusual," he said. "This is close to a once-in-a-lifetime find."
It is also known as "partial fusion crust," caused by the tremendous heat that sears the rock as it descends through the atmosphere.
"It actually toasted on the outside," Notkin said.
Another thing that makes it different from most meteorites is that it is "unpaired." and perhaps more valuable to science.
