HONG KONG – A woman with a knife attacked Friday 14 children in a nursery school in southwestern China, injuring 14 children before being arrested by teachers and guards, police said.
The attack on the children's garden in Banan District, Chongqing City, took place around 9:30 am, as the children returned to class after morning outdoor exercise, announced the police in a statement.
The wounded children were all sent to the hospital for treatment. There was no immediate word on their conditions.
The suspect, identified only as a 39-year-old woman with the surname Liu, was arrested immediately after the knife shooting. The video posted by the Chinese media showed police surrounding a woman wearing a red top as passersby screamed, kicked and punched.
Shooting is rare in China, where firearms are strictly regulated and difficult for citizens to acquire. But massive attacks with a knife are not uncommon and targets are often schoolchildren.
Experts say the attackers sometimes try to express their anger at the company for problems such as unemployment. Mental health is often cited as a factor.
