The victim was transported to the Carolinas Medical Center in critical condition. Officials said that he died later of his injuries.

Authorities said the suspect, another student, was arrested after the incident.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg superintendent of schools, Clayton Wilcox, told WSOC-TV that one student was upset by another, which resulted in shooting in a main hall of the school shortly after 7 am .

"We are extremely saddened by the fact that we have lost our lives on one of our campuses today, which makes it even more difficult, it is that it was 39, one of our students who was the shooter, "said Wilcox. "First of all, our hearts go out to the wider community and to all the young people who have witnessed this tragedy today."

Police said the incident had been captured on a surveillance video.

A teenager told WSOC-TV that he had seen a student open fire on a classmate Monday while the comrade was away.

"I just treated everything, what's going on," Jorge Sanchez told WSOC-TV. "I saw the gun and I had to run."

Officials said that a school officer was nearby during the incident and placed the alleged gunman in custody in a classroom. Authorities said that the weapon used during the shooting was also in the possession of law enforcement officials.

Police said the incident seemed isolated and that the school had been secured by agents. Nobody seems to have been involved in the shooting.

The families were greeted by agents who prevented them from getting too close to the building. School district officials said the closing of Butler High School was lifted at 9:15 am and parents could pick up their children.

School district officials said the classes would be held on campus as scheduled Monday.
