Eighteen children died of diphtheria in a municipal hospital in northwestern Delhi, while the mayor of the region had set up a panel to examine the dead, officials said Sunday.
Twelve deaths were reported at the Maharishi Valmiki Infectious Disease Hospital on September 20 and another at the LNJP Hospital. "A total of 18 children have died in the Civic Hospital so far, 17 of the patients came from outside Delhi and only one belonged to Delhi," said a senior NDMC official. .

North West Delhi Hospital is run by the Delhi Municipal Corporation.

The report should be submitted to him in three days, they said, adding that the panel was headed by an additional NDMC commissioner.
Medical superintendent Sunil Kumar Gupta on September 20 had stated that the patients belonged to a group of 9 years old.
Gupta said the hospital has all the necessary treatment facilities to handle such cases.
"Patients admitted at an advanced stage could not respond to treatment and therefore could not survive," he said.
