Some 180 veterinarians from 14 African countries will benefit from a training program initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Institute of Infectious Diseases based in the United States, FAO said in a statement.

Veterinary epidemiologists from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda will benefit from applied veterinary epidemiology in service (ISAVET), according to the FAO.

The ISAVET program will take place over the next 12 months and will focus on public, animal and wildlife health as pathogens transcending institutional mandates and geographic boundaries, FAO said.

The initiative in Africa follows a similar program launched 10 years ago in Asia, which has now set up training centers in Thailand, China and Indonesia, FAO said.
