As Fred White exchanged stories and jokes with his teammates of The Tennessee National Championship team in 1998 this weekend, he realized that not many things have changed in 20 years.

"We are still a family," said the former Safety Flights on Saturday.

Members of the last National Flight Team met Friday, and were honored on Saturday as part of the Tennessee match against Florida at Neyland Stadium.

Team captains – Shawn Bryson, Jeff Hall, Mercedes Hamilton and Al Wilson – were recognized as "the legends of the game" about 20 minutes before the kickoff against the Gators. The team and staff were also honored in the field at the end of the first quarter.

"An incredible achievement. An incredible feat with incredible guys. We had a great team, "said Wilson, former linebacker of the Vols.

"People say they will not appreciate until you get older. It's an absolute truth. Twenty years later, I really appreciate it, because now you understand how difficult it is to win a national championship and stay undefeated. "

It is normal that the recognition of the team is done during the week of Florida. For many, the 17-17 overtime victory against the Gators – after which the goals were eliminated – is still superior to UTC's 23-16 win over Florida State at the Fiesta Bowl to win the national title.

"This match in Florida, to me, has taken us to the next level," Wilson said.

He broke the series of five consecutive defeats from Tennessee to the Gators.

"It was just a dynamic match," said Travis Stephens.

It was one of five games that the Vols have won this season by eight points or less.

"We did not think we could lose this season," said White. "We rolled so much."
