Two people died after a single-engine plane crashed into a neighborhood street in Detroit Sunday night, west of the city's airport. Another person was taken to the hospital.
Detroit police captain Mark Thornton said one man and one woman were killed and one survivor is in critical condition at the Detroit hospital.
No additional details were immediately available on the victims Sunday night.
Thornton said the plane was coming from Arkansas, having departed around 3:40 pm. and was scheduled to arrive at Coleman Young International Airport at 19:57. Authorities received the call at 20:02. that the plane crashed, he said.
It appears that the aircraft struck a tree and that a propeller was standing on the street in Milton, just west of Van Dyke and near the Forest Lawn Cemetery, on the east side of the city, according to photographer Bill Eisner. The plane landed upside down.
Eisner said that part of the plane had been burned where the engine was.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, three people were aboard the Cessna 210 which crashed near Coleman A. Young International Airport and was destroyed by fire, said spokeswoman Lynn Lunsford .
According to preliminary information, the pilot had reported a landing gear problem and a low fuel level to air traffic controllers shortly before the accident, Lunsford said.
He said the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board would investigate the accident, with the NTSB being the main investigative body.
Lunsford said that none of the agencies identifies people involved in plane crashes, referring to local authorities to release this information.
The plane narrowly missed several houses and crashed into an open field.
Larry Whitfield, 72, who has been around the corner for 20 years, said, "The plane just passed over from home, I was in the house and I l? I heard knocking.
He said that he ran out of the house and around the corner and immediately encountered a plane that had crashed and people trying to get the passengers out. He said that the plane was on fire.
"A guy, a big guy, near a window could not go out and he could not breathe, I had a stick, it was not working, so another guy had an ax," he said. said Whitfield.
While the crowd was shouting to them that the plane was about to explode, Whitfield said he and the other man had used the ax to open the window and open the door to the door. ;plane.
At one point, a passenger came out and emergency relief personnel started working on him, said Whitfield, but the others could not escape.
Whitfield said that he looked as closely as possible and said the big guy he had been trying to help "had to be dead, his legs were all burned."
When asked if he felt like a hero, Whitfield said that "no matter who would have done it".
WDIV-TV reported that the single-engine aircraft was coming from Texas and that it had left an airport in Arkansas. Lunsford said that he has not seen a flight plan yet
He said the NTSB usually publishes a preliminary report in a week to 10 days after an accident and that it typically takes up to a year or more to complete an investigation.
