HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (WHTM) – The fight against the opioid crisis is a huge challenge for the United States.

Two million Americans have become addicted to drugs, both legal and illegal versions.

No other country is taking as much prescription opioids as US citizens.

The drugs are so addictive that they bind to areas of the brain that control pain and emotions and cause an intense feeling of euphoria, but that does not last.

As the body gets used to drugs, it takes more and more to reach that state of euphoria and pain relief, and it is at that point that it becomes mortal.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, opioid deaths continue to be the leading cause of unintended deaths in the United States.

As always, if you or a loved one needs help to recover from an addiction, you can call this number at 1-800-622-HELP (4357). It is a hotline of qualified professionals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
