HOUSTON – Two people were hospitalized Tuesday after being exposed to a white powdery substance found in an object sent to Senator Ted Cruz's campaign office in Houston.

The incident was reported around noon in the Phoenix Tower at 3200 Southwest Freeway in Houston's Greenway neighborhood.

Officials said people complained of nausea and tingling before being taken to the hospital.

Firefighters said the powder tests were negative for any dangerous substance.

The people were briefly evacuated from the ninth floor of the building where the package was opened.

"It did not seem like we were going to be exposed to anything," said Nathan Milsaps, who works on the 21st floor where he's been sheltering on site.

Houston police said the FBI was taking charge of the investigation. The United States Postal Service is also investigating.

Cruz spokeswoman Christine Frazier confirmed that the article had been sent to the office but would not have provided any further details on the nature of the article.

Frazier told The Associated Press that none of the campaign staff were affected.

Republican Party President James Dickey issued the following statement:

"We are grateful that those who have been exposed to the powder have been subjected to a negative test for any dangerous substance. We look forward to discovering more details as they become available. "

In 2016, a mysterious substance was sent to Senator Cruz's office. Authorities determined that it was soap.
