Two policemen were killed Saturday morning in a shootout in Mississippi, police said.

Police officers James White, 35, and Zack Moak, 31, were killed while answering a call at 5 am about gun shots in the small town of Brookhaven, south of Jackson. .

When the police arrived at the scene, there was an exchange of gunfire between them and one or more suspects, Brookhaven police said at a news conference. White and Moak were both fatally injured.

A suspect, identified as 25-year-old Marquis Flowers, was wounded and taken to a Jackson hospital where he is being treated and taken into custody, the police said. The police service would not comment on his injuries.

Brookhaven Police Chief Kenneth Collins expressed his sympathy to the families of the police.

"It's really heartbreaking for us to go out here and do our daily work and deal with all the things that are against us," Collins said at the press conference. "I just want you to know that there are two great people who have lost their lives in the line of duty, and they are both heroes."

Collins said the department had cameras for both the body and the dash for the officers, but it is unclear whether they were used during the Saturday shooting incident.
