Rome, Italy –

At least 20 people were injured when an escalator in Rome's metropolitan system collapsed Tuesday night.

A video broadcast on Sky TG24 shows the staircase suddenly accelerating, and the people who cross it collapse. The dramatic sequence shows people on the parallel escalator who are trying to put others safe.

The cause was not immediately known. The investigators closed the metropolitan station of Piazza Repubblica, near the main station of Termini.

"The scene we found was people piled up at the bottom of the escalator," said Rome Fire Chief Giampietro Boscaino. "People who find themselves on the other side are looking for help. They suffered various injuries caused by the twisted escalator, resulting in serious injury. "

The prefect's office has increased the number of casualties, mainly Russians, to 20 for a UEFA Champions League football match between CSKA Moscow and Roma. Firefighters said seven were in serious condition.

The ANSA news agency, citing the mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, reportedly said that witnesses had reported that people were jumping and dancing on the escalator before the accident. ANSA also quoted city transport agency officials as saying that maintenance of the subway escalators was done every month.

Meanwhile, a CSKA supporter was stabbed in clashes between foreign supporters at Stadio Olimpico, the ANSA news agency reported.

About 1,500 CSKA supporters attended the match.
