At least 17 people, mostly firefighters, were reported injured on Monday after several vehicles caught fire in a parking lot in the New York shopping center, sending plumes of black smoke into the air.

At least 15 firefighters and two others have sustained life-threatening injuries, the New York City Fire Department said.

The massive fire was reported at the Kings Plaza Mall in Brooklyn just before 9 am. The fire on the second floor of the car park has quickly worsened, with more than 200 firefighters responding to the scene in one hour.

"Kings Plaza is currently closed. Several cars on fire in the garage and smoke conditions. FDNY on stage. Avoid the area, "tweeted a spokesman for the mall.

Photos and videos of people nearby showed thick black smoke pervading the area.

Officials told Fox News that firefighters would investigate the fire once they are under control.
