The favourite and First reformed each of the three nominated films for the Gotham Independent Film Awards was announced today.
Both films are in the running for the best feature film and the best screenplay. The following films have each been nominated for two awards: Eighth grade, hereditary, if Beale Street could speak, leave no trace, Madeline Madeline, privacy, sorry to bother you and Support girls.
In the Best Feature category, Yorgos Lanthimos filmed two women from Queen Anne's court fighting for her attention and affection (The favourite) and Paul Schrader's latest book on a troubled pastor, attracted by violence (First reformed) will compete with Barry Jenkins Moonlight to follow If Beale Street could speak, Joseph Decker Madeline's Madeline and Chloé Zhao The horseman.
In the best scenario, where The favourite is represented by screenwriters Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara, the other nominees are Tamara Jenkins for Private life, Andrew Bujalski for Support girls and Cory Finley for Purebred.
The best nominated actor is Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman), Ben Foster (Leave no trace), Richard E. Grant (Can you ever forgive me?), Ethan Hawke (First reformed) and Lakeith Stanfield (sorry to disturb you). The nominees for best actress are Glenn Close (Wife), Toni Collette (Hereditary), Kathryn Hahn (Private life), Regina Hall (Support girls) and Michelle Pfeiffer (Where is Kyra?). The nomination committee for the best actress also voted in favor of awarding a special jury prize to the country's three leading actresses. The favourite – Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz – for their overall performance.
Weisz, also previously announced, will receive the actress's tribute at this year's Gotham Awards, alongside other winners, Willem Dafoe (actor), Paul Greengrass (director) and Jon Kamen (industry) .
On the TV side, the Gotham Awards, which started recognizing the small screen rate three years ago, were named Alias Grace, Big Mouth, Fascinating End of the World, Killing Eve, Pose and Sharp objects for its revolutionary series – Longform Award.
Nominees at the Gotham Awards are selected by film critic committees, journalists, festival programmers and curators. Separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in filmmaking will determine the winners of the final prize.
IFP members can vote online from November 19 to 24 for the winner of the final category of the contest, the Audience Award. The 15 nominated films for Best Feature, Best Documentary and Outstanding Director Bingham Ray are the finalists in this category. IFP members will also vote for the winner in the short series category (all nominees for which they are available online).
The Gotham Awards are considered the unofficial start of the Oscars season. Recent Gotham Award Winners Include Oscars Nominees and Winners Call me by your name, Moonlight, Projector, Birdman, Childhood, Citizenfour, In Llewyn Davis, The Act of Killing, The Kingdom of Moonrise, Wild South Beasts, Beginners, The Tree of Life, Bone of the Moon 'winter and The Hurt Locker.
The 2018 Gotham Awards will take place on Monday, November 26 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York.
