Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers play Game 4 of the 2018 World Series Saturday evening. The Dodgers, for their part, are trying to avoid a 3-1 deficit in the best-of-seven series. But before Rich Hill and Eduardo Rodriguez could take the mound and start the game, the Dodgers held a special ceremony before the first throw.
Thirty or so years ago, the Dodgers competed in the 1988 World Series against the Oakland Athletics. In the first game, Kirk GIbson kicked home a home against Dennis Eckersley. The image of Gibson, hampered by leg injuries, pumping his fist as he rounds the bases has become a staple in the post-season tradition. It's here:
Before game 4, Eckersley delivered the first pitch to Gibson in a pretty little moment:
Eckersley, for one, has been a good sport overall. Take a look at how he showed up at Dodger Stadium last year:
Some players would hesitate to recognize a moment that, in their opinion, could eclipse or obscure an otherwise brilliant career. Not Eckersley. He seems to like the game to the point that just being involved in such a moment is considered a highlight.
It's refreshing – and the resulting first pitch was pretty cool.
