While last year's list included only 63 Chinese universities, this year's ranking includes 72 Chinese institutions. By contrast, in Europe, Germany received a significant boost for the 2019 ranking, with eight of the country's top 100 institutions.

Countries like India and Australia have not managed to stand out, as only six Australian institutions were in the top 100 and none of the top ones even reached the top 200.
