24 injured in the malfunction of an escalator taken on video in Rome

Twenty-four people were injured after the malfunction of an escalator and a rapid descent into a Rome metro station, leaving passengers in a tangle from the bottom, Italian officials said.

Three of the victims are in serious condition, including a man who has partially lost his foot.

Most of those involved in the horrific incident on Tuesday night at Repubblica metro station were Russian football fans heading for a Champions League match between Roma and CSKA in Moscow, a spokesman for the Czech Republic said. Italian fire brigade.

Stefano Valentini, of the regional ambulance service, said the wounded had been transported to five different hospitals in the Italian capital.

A hospital, Policlinico Umberto I, located in the San Lorenzo district in Rome, said a 33-year-old patient had suffered a "complex trauma with a disassembled fracture and exposed right lower limb and a broken nose ".

The hospital bulletin added that the victim had been immediately operated on.

"The patient is now in postoperative intensive care," he said.

On Tuesday night, Rome's fire and rescue services released a photo of the steps of the escalator that were damaged due to apparent malfunction.

A representative from ATAC, Rome's public transit company, stated that "all escalator maintenance checks were performed regularly and the results were in accordance with standards".

The Repubblica metro station remains closed, ATAC reported on Twitter, because of ongoing investigations.

The prosecutor's office in Rome has opened an investigation into the cause of the accident, while ATAC has also launched an internal investigation.

The mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, posted a live video on Facebook on Tuesday night and said she was expressing her "solidarity to the wounded" and that the authorities needed to understand what had happened.

She stated that it appeared that "some Russian partisans were dancing and jumping on the escalator".
