RALEIGH, N.C. –
A 29-year-old woman, originally from North Carolina, died from an "apparent heart attack caused by flu complications."
Scarlett VanStory Levinson passed away on Tuesday.
She was originally from Fayetteville, North Carolina and worked as a lawyer at Levinson & Axford, with offices in Raleigh and Benson.
"Scarlett was a valued and valued member of our law firm, remarkable for her generosity, wit and heart, and we lost a great friend, colleague and partner," the company said in a statement. "She will be missed by all members of our offices, our families and the community of North Carolina."
There have been two other flu-related deaths in North Carolina.
The medical director of Buncombe County said that an elderly person died of the flu this week. In addition, Kathy Hartenstine, a member of the Wake County School Board, died of the flu last month.
Last year was one of the most deadly influenza seasons in North Carolina's recent history, with 391 deaths.
Doctors across the country are urging people to get vaccinated early this year. They recommend getting a flu shot before the end of October.
