COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) – A ferry with 294 passengers boarded failed on Tuesday in the Baltic after a power failure on Tuesday, announced the Danish DFDS operator. No injuries were reported.

The malfunction onboard the Regina Seaways caused the formation of smoke, which triggered the ship's fire suppression system in the engine room, DFDS said in a statement.

The passengers were gathered at the assembly stations for possible evacuation, but this was not necessary because "the situation is under control," the statement said.

The extent of the damage was not yet fully known and it was not clear whether the ship could continue alone or if it needed the help of a tug, the company said.

The ferry, which also included cars and trucks, was traveling between the ports of Kiel (Germany) and Klaipeda (Lithuania).

The ship was in international waters off Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania in the Baltic Sea.

According to the Russian news agency Tass, Andrei Permyakov, head of the coordination center for sea rescue operations in Kaliningrad, was quoted as saying that rescuers from Lithuania, Russia and Poland had responded to the call.

The Lithuanian Navy has stated that one of its helicopters and three navy ships had been sent to the site in case of evacuation needed.

The Regina Seaways was built in 2010 and can carry up to 500 passengers.
