3 die of breast cancer after an organ transplant of the same donor

According to one study, three people died of breast cancer, which is considered an "extraordinary" case.

Newsweek reported that four recipients had been diagnosed with cancer in the space of 16 months to six years after the transplant, citing the American Journal of Transplantation.

The three diagnosed cancer cases died after the spread of the disease. Another patient survived surgery to remove the transplanted kidney. This patient has also received chemotherapy treatment.

A fifth transplant recipient died of sepsis and his cancer was not diagnosed.

According to the study, doctors have not spotted tumor cells in the organs before transplanting them into patients.

But doctors insist that the chances of getting cancer from a donor are slim: only a chance of 0.01 to 0.005%.

Doctors believe that the tumor cells could have spread because the hot organs were stored without blood supply.

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 266,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2018.
