NEW YORK – Three children, all aged one month or less, were stabbed Friday morning in a daycare center in New York City, police said.
Authorities were called at 3:40 pm in a day care residence on 161st Street between 45th and 43rd Flushing Avenues.
According to the police, the adults at the top heard screaming from below. They went down and saw a 52-year-old woman stab three infants with a butcher knife and a machete.
A 1 month old baby and a 3 day old baby were stabbed in the stomach. A 20-day-old man was stabbed in the ear, chin and mouth, the police said.
The father of one of the children tried to intervene and was stabbed in the leg, police said.
The woman also stabbed a co-worker eight times, the police told WPIX.
According to the authorities, there were nine children and their parents at the scene at the time of the incident.
The police arrived and found the woman in the basement kitchen with knife wounds inflicted on her arm. She was detained for psychological assessment, the authorities said.
