Authorities are still investigating an accident that killed three people in the same city south of Jersey.
Chief of Police Allen J. Cummings described "horribly" the scene of Friday night's accident on South Hook Road in Pennsville Township.
"During my 28 years of experience in policing, I have never been involved in an investigation into an accident where three people were killed in the same vehicle," he said. said the leader.
According to the preliminary investigation, Cummings said that a Ford Focus heading north had crossed the center line and had struck a Hyundai Sonata, which was heading south on the road at about 20:47.
The three people killed in the accident were all in the home. They included the 74-year-old female driver, a 60-year-old front passenger and a 60-year-old male rear passenger.
All three were declared dead on the scene.
All come from nearby Carneys Point Township, but Cummings on Saturday morning said the authorities were still working to inform all relatives of the victims before revealing their names.
The Sonata driver and front passenger, both from Wilmington, Delaware, were taken to a local hospital with injuries described by Cummings as "serious but not life-threatening". They stayed there Saturday morning.
Two young children who were in the Sonata, an infant and a toddler, were taken to A.I. Pont Hospital outside Wilmington to assess. Cummings said that these people would not have been hurt.
All of the Sonata's occupants were wearing seatbelts or child seats. The two victims of the Focus in front of the front bench were wearing their seatbelt. The victim was not in the back, the police said.
Fire and rescue teams from Salem County were called to the scene of the accident. Due to the impact of the accident, all victims had to be cleared of their vehicles. In some cases, roofs and doors have been removed to reach them.
A witness told the police that they were driving behind the Focus and saw him drifting in the other way by hitting the Sonata.
The scene of the accident is located just south of Winslow Lane. It is rural and surrounded mainly by fields and wooded areas. Only a few houses are nearby.
South Hook Road was closed for more than three hours between Mahoney Road and South Broadway for the purpose of the crash investigation.
The New Jersey State Police and Salem County Prosecutor's Office also contributed to the investigation.
Cummings congratulated stakeholders and staff at the Salem County Communications Center for handling the accident.
